Are Your Self Improvement Efforts Being Derailed by Illusions and Delusions?

Sunday, December 20, 2009

By Robert A. Meyer

You adopt a new diet or start another self-improvement course. For a short time you seem to be successful then something happens that bumps you off the path. You become discouraged and give up. Once again you have failed.

Now depending on your resolve and willpower you discover another diet or self- improvement course. You tell yourself this is the answer. You embark on your new journey. Lo and behold the same thing happens. You are once again thrown off the path. You become discouraged--you give up.

Several failures are enough to make most people permanently give up. They bear their illusions and live a life that is considerably less than it can be. Other more hardy souls move on and discover a new program.

Unfortunately some negative things are happening to both the quitters and the persisters.

The quitters have reinforced a give it up attitude and will suffer a diminished self-esteem and probably live a life of failure or mediocrity at best.

The persisters have the problem of their self-esteem taking one hammering after the other. There's a good chance they try and try again--and fail. Periods of depression and hopelessness alternate with times of hope and new effort.

Believe it or not the persistent ones could be much worse off than the quitters. Imagine increasing your knowledge and thinking you're getting better only to experience more failure. From this you could conclude that self-improvement courses just don't work. You're doomed by your own ineffectiveness.

Now before all the self-improvement gurus get in an uproar I will state that I'm grateful for all the help I've received from them. They've been very helpful.

This being the case, what's the problem?

Your Field of Dreams

Imagine being on the field of life, your own field of dreams. It not only encompasses your present moment but the totality of your life.

You are born with everything you've inherited which gives you some qualities and limitations. You're then exposed to an environment that could be basically helpful, hurtful or probably a combination of the two.

Of course you're taught some good things such as brushing your teeth, bathing and maybe even important principles such as honesty and helpfulness.

Unfortunately much of society's illusions have been handed down from generation to generation. When you look at all the problems in the world and the personal problems individuals suffer you have to conclude something is wrong.

What's wrong is that much of what people believe is an illusion. Some illusions are so powerful they mutate into delusions. Look at the history of mankind and you realize that delusions have been in abundant supply. Wars, crimes, poverty, failed social systems are all results of government intervention based on faulty economic beliefs and the delusions of the anti-life philosophy of altruism.

On a personal level it is usually personal illusions that keep individuals from having a life of peace, love, harmony and abundance--although the delusions of "society" are a contributing factor.

Now we will return to the playing field of life. Over the years a person's illusions take root and grow. They are weeds that are extremely difficult to eradicate.

You realize that your life could be better. You are overweight, out of shape, always low on money, suffering from lack of intellectual stimulation, having less than fulfilling relationships, etc. You make up your mind it's time to change. You join a self help program, read the right books, and do whatever else it takes.

With your new knowledge you begin planting new seeds, taking action by eating better, exercising and adopting new behaviors.

For a short time you actually make progress. You overcome some of your problems. Then suddenly you hit what seems to be a brick wall. Progress stops. You regress. You give up or try again and run into the same brick wall.

You are told you have to keep chipping away to make progress, but it doesn't work. It's not a brick wall you are up against. You are in a field of illusions.

Your illusions have taken root and grown to monstrous heights. You can't see through them and you can't see above them. They have completely covered your field of dreams. Nothing could possibly grow in this field.

When you embark on a self-improvement program you are planting new seeds. Your nurture your seeds. The plants and flowers of success begin to grow. However the weeds of illusion block out any sunlight and snuff out your positive growth. Failure and the death of your dreams are the only possible consequence.

What can you do? It is like you're defeated before you start. There's only one solution. You must get to the root of the matter.

Cutting down the weeds of illusion is not a long term solution. They will only grow back. You uproot your illusions and permanently remove them.

A Vision of Success

During a meditation I had a vision I was in a field. My path was blocked by weeds of illusions. They were miles high and spread as far as I could see.

I experienced a sudden realization. I knew why many of the seeds I planted never resulted in a harvest. Cutting down this forest of weeds was useless.

The next thing I knew I was pulling the weeds out of the ground by their roots. This took some effort and time. Finally I completed the job. There were so many of them on the ground I wondered how I would be able to proceed down the path.

Then a miracle happened. They begin to decay and wither away. A strong wind finally blew them away. Not only was my path clear, I could once again begin planting the seeds of success and happiness. Nothing would stop them from growing. I would finally reap a bountiful harvest.

Unless you can get at the root of your illusions and delusions your success will be limited. Your harvest will always be devoured by weeds that have taken hold. Your path to love, prosperity, harmony and all the good things in life is blocked. You keep planting in the same doomed field. Eventually the field becomes infertile.

There is hope. The saying "get to the root of the matter" definitely applies. Meditation will help you discover these weeds and get to the root of the matter. Also a technology called Holosync is available that will help you remap your brain and built new connections between the hemispheres. You eradicate the pain and suffering that controls your life by eliminating your illusions.

The teachings of Libertarianism will stimulate your mind in life-enhancing ways--supplying the tools that help you take the kind of actions that result in success.

Now you can focus your mind on what you desire and plant the seeds of success. Spiritual growth and self-improvement actually become your reality. You begin to live The Libertarian Way.
